Improve Your Child's Reading Skills

As a parent do you ever wonder how you can get your children more interested in reading and get them to watch television less? This issue is a challenge for most parents. In order to accomplish this it is important to establish opportunities to share reading with your children. The following opportunities for reading can make reading more fun for your children and improve your childrens' reading comprehension. Buy books on tape and listen to them in the home or in the car. Turn off the television and listen to the books on tape together as a family. Get a discussion going on the book topics and make comments. Buy a subscription to a magazine that holds alot of interest for your child. It may be a magazine such as Highlights or Top Secret from Disney. Discuss the articles in the magazine with your child. Take your children to the library on a regular basis. Apply for library cards for each child. Most libraries have special reading programs you can involve your children in. Many libraries have summer reading programs that award incentives when your child has read a number of books. Get your children involved in these reading programs. Take your children to the book store to look over books on their topics of interest. Make a trip to the library to check out the books they are interested in or buy them on Amazon.com at a significant discount over the bookstore prices. It is important to read aloud together every day. If your children are older, have them read aloud at the dinner table to everyone in the family before bedtime. Follow this reading by a family discussion about the book subject matter. If your child is reading a difficult book, read it aloud together. Go back and reread difficult sections in order to enhance the child's understanding of the text. Discuss the subject to enhance your child's comprehension. Younger children really enjoy snuggling in bed with mom or dad and being read to. Encourage your child to write a daily diary or journal.
